What is one thing you would want to share with your fellow brothers and sisters?
I want to share that I am always available if guidance or questions come up. Applying to graduate programs can be an overwhelming task, and I want to ensure I can help minimize all of that. Although I never thought I would take any gap years before embarking on medical school, I ended up grateful to be a non-traditional applicant to medical school and the experiences I was able to have before medical school.
What are you most proud of our chapter for?
I am so proud of the growth that I have seen in the Chapter — the chapter seems enormous from when I first started as a founding member and it has been amazing to watch it grow and improve year after year.
How are you changing or challenging the world around you today?
As a Latina immigrant medical student, I am changing the world around me by becoming part of the representation that is missing in medicine. Additionally, I hope to serve Latinx and other marginalized communities by bringing my skills and experiences to improve patient care outcomes.
What are useful lessons/tools you have learned that can help others today?
I think the most beneficial shift I did throughout my journey into medicine is reaching out to others for help. I don’t think I would have been able to accomplish graduating college and then applying to medical school without the help of mentors, advisors, friends and family. Do not be afraid to ask for help as it will make you a better student and in the future a better healthcare professional.
How has DEM positively contributed to your success as a professional today?
DEM has positively contributed to my success as a professional today by helping me build the necessary skills to collaborate with other students in a cohesive and efficient way. Through setting up volunteering, educational and social events, we learned how to balance diverse events so that we have a well-rounded outlook and schedule throughout our undergraduate career. I am grateful for these experiences as I carried the knowledge and skills I learned through DEM in medical school. Additionally, DEM has introduced me to the most wonderful friends I have to this day that supported my journey into medicine and beyond.
